Following the development of the Dolphin Watching activity on the west coast of the island (estimated to generate around 120 million rupees (3,000,000 Euros) annually), the MMCS put forward a long term plan to protect the coastal marine resources.
In order to achieve this objective, the project included several components:
- Education and training of the operators as well as the general public on good observation practices to minimize disturbance of the marine mammals in Mauritian waters.
- Contributing to increasing scientific knowledge on the resident dolphin species through a behavioural and population study.
- Helping local authorities in developing an adequate legislation for sustainable management of the Dolphin Watching activity.
